Emergency Medical Care

When travelling outside your home province or country, medical care can be confusing and expensive—with your Alberta Health Care plan only providing minimal coverage. Our emergency medical travel insurance keeps you protected from the financial costs of unexpected injuries and illnesses wherever you travel.

  • For single-trip or multi-trip plans.
  • Coverage for up to $5 million.
  • Access to 24/7 emergency travel assistance.
  • Coverage for pre-existing conditions, when stability requirements met.
  • Hospital services, prescription drugs, ambulance, medical evacuation, medical follow-up in Canada and more.

Trip Cancellation or Interruption coverage

Trip disruptions—a cancelled flight or an unexpected family emergency back home—can ruin your trip and leave you out-of-pocket thousands of dollars. Trip Cancellation or Interruption coverage protects your investment and gives you the freedom to adventure without worries.

  • Trip cancellation coverage for single-trip plans covers up to the cost of your trip and up to $5,000 for multi-trip plans.
  • Unlimited trip interruption coverage.

Baggage coverage

You arrived at your destination—but your suitcases didn’t. Baggage coverage can help you cover the cost of your items.

  • Up to $1,500 for lost, stolen or damaged items.
  • Up to $250 for lost or stolen travel documents like passports.

Flight Delay Service

Flight Delay Service is available at no extra cost when you purchase a travel insurance plan with us. If your flight is delayed, you have access to exclusive benefits to help make your wait more comfortable.

  • Delay of 3 hours or more provides access to an airport lounge. If the lounge is unavailable, you will receive $40 in compensation.
  • Delay of 6 hours or more provides access to a hotel room and $50 per person allowance, up to a maximum of $200 per policy. If a hotel room is unavailable, you will receive $250 in compensation.

All travellers listed in the travel insurance plan are eligible to receive this service. However, you need to register up to 1 hour before your departure time. Register for Flight Delay Service at flightdelayservice.ca

Flight Delay Service is not available for those receiving travel coverage through a group benefit plan or personal health plan.

Accidental Death and Dismemberment

Serious, life-changing accidents can happen when you least expect it. Accidental Death and Dismemberment coverage can offer peace of mind and added protection while travelling.

  • Coverage for up to $300,000, depending on age and circumstances.

Travel advisories

Travel advisories issued by the Government of Canada are the official source for destination-specific travel information. They give you important information to help you answer questions like: Are there any climate or weather concerns? Is the political situation stable? Are there any major health outbreaks?

When there is an elevated security concern, advisories will caution you against all or non-essential travel to a specific city, region or country. These concerns include health emergencies, terrorism, protests, violence, war, rebellion, natural disasters and political instability.

We recommend that you check travel advisories frequently. But it’s critical to check before you book your trip and right before you leave. You are responsible for knowing if advisories are in place. Travel warnings are issued and updated regularly, so make sure you check travel advisories often.

Learn more about Emergency Medical Care coverage

It covers medical or related expenses caused by an accident or emergency when you’re outside of Alberta. Our emergency medical travel insurance covers medical costs up to $5 million with optional deductibles to reduce premiums. Covered costs can include:

  • hospital services,
  • health care professional expenses,
  • prescriptions and diagnostic services,
  • medical appliances,
  • emergency dental services,
  • meals and accommodations,
  • return flights because of medical delays, and
  • return of dependants, pets, personal items and vehicles.

It covers emergency medical expenses if you test positive for COVID-19 during your trip. This includes:

  • quarantine expenses due to a medical emergency
  • the cost of taking a COVID-19 test when prescribed by a physician following a medical emergency or sudden illness

If you or your travel partner test positive for COVID-19 during your trip and you need to stay at your destination, your insurance contract will be extended free of charge for:

  • the period you are unable to board, and
  • the following 24-hour period when your return home is postponed due to a positive COVID-19 test or contact tracing

While staying at your destination to receive care for COVID-19, you will receive an allowance for accommodation in a commercial establishment, meals, taxi transportation and childcare for dependent children travelling with you.

Travel assistance supports you during an emergency so you don’t have to deal with the stress of an injury or illness in an unfamiliar country alone.

Call our 24-hour assistance line if you get hurt or sick. Our travel assistance team is here for you—let them help you find an appropriate physician, clinic or hospital, or get you home in the event of a medical emergency. They can help in non-medical situations like locating legal counsel in the event of a serious illness.

It’s important to note that calling the travel assistance team after you are hospitalized or receive medical consultation may result in your claim being denied.

Single-trip plans are available for all ages, including seniors, and provide coverage for up to 366 days—the week-long family vacation in Hawaii, the annual snowbird trip to Phoenix or the three-month Thailand adventure are all great times for single-trip.

Multi-trip annual plans cover any number of trips, to a maximum of 180 days per trip, over a year. Annual plans are a good way to get a great rate on travel coverage if you know you’ll be in and out of the province a few times this year.

You need to purchase it before you leave your province of residence—you can’t buy it after you leave.

You can purchase it if you are enrolled under the Alberta Health Care plan, you buy your travel plan before you leave on your trip and you meet the eligibility criteria. When you’re ready to get a quote, you’ll be asked some questions up front to make sure you’re eligible for our plans. The bottom line: we won’t sell you a plan that can’t protect you properly, but we’ll work with you to try to find something that fits if it’s available. Our travel plans are designed for Albertans looking to enjoy a relaxed vacation, so depending on the kinds of activities you want to do, there is a limit on what Alberta Blue Cross® will cover. Activities that we consider to be extreme sports will not be eligible for coverage should you get hurt. In other words, if it’s not considered a traditional sport, or it’s made extreme and dangerous by modifying the equipment or locale, the claim isn’t likely to be covered. Here are some examples of extreme sports:

  • ballooning, parachuting;
  • bungee jumping;
  • climbing or mountaineering, rock climbing;
  • hang gliding, gliding;
  • heli-skiing;
  • rodeo activity;
  • sky diving;
  • white water rafting;
  • ziplining;
  • para-gliding, para-sailing;
  • amateur scuba diving, unless you hold at least a basic scuba diving license from a certified school;
  • downhill skiing or snowboarding outside marked trails.

Learn more about Trip Cancellation or Interruption, and Baggage coverage

Trip cancellation offers coverage for prepaid, non-refundable travel expenses like airfare or hotel deposits. You’re covered for a range of scenarios that can happen before you leave, but cancellation only applies if the causes fall within the policy, so make sure to read it closely. For single-trip plans, we cover up to the cost of your trip and up to $5,000 per trip for multi-trip annual plans. For example, we provide coverage for:

  • non-refundable, non-transferable travel costs like hotels or other accommodations; and
  • double occupancy to single occupancy charges.

Trip interruption coverage helps you get home or stay longer in case of emergencies while travelling. It helps ensure you can afford to make it home without any financial set-backs. Interruption coverage is unlimited. For example, we provide coverage for:

  • transportation costs (home or to continue your trip),
  • vehicle return expenses when you cannot return your personal car or rental car due to an injury or illness
  • a subsistence allowance to pay for meals, essential phone calls, accommodation, taxi transportation and childcare for dependent children travelling with you

For lost, stolen or damaged bags, we offer up to $1,500 per person per trip with a $300 limit per item. For delayed baggage, we provide $500 per person per trip. We also cover the cost of replacing lost or stolen travel documents like passports, up to $250.

Some costs related to COVID-19 may be covered. This means you could be covered if:

  • you test positive for COVID-19 before you leave and need to postpone your trip
  • you test positive for COVID-19 during your trip and need to extend your stay

If you wish to cancel or postpone your trip due to COVID-19, first contact your service provider (e.g., travel agency or air carrier) that sold your trip to request a refund or postponement. Then, please contact our customer service agents to explain your situation.

Bad, unpredictable weather is the cause of many flight delays or cancellations. If you purchased a travel insurance plan from us, it includes Flight Delay Service. This service offers access to an airport lounge, hotel room or per person allowance, depending on how long the delay is.

It’s best to buy as soon as you book your trip. Cancellation insurance protects you from unexpected circumstances that arise in your life. The value of cancellation insurance starts as soon as it’s purchased, long before you leave.

You can add Trip Cancellation or Interruption coverage to your existing medical travel insurance plan, whether it’s through your employer or an individual plan.
