Buying travel coverage
Why do I need travel coverage outside of Alberta or Canada?
Alberta Health limits some coverage outside the province and covers only limited physician and hospital expenses outside Canada. These costs can be significant. Albertans are strongly encouraged to purchase supplementary health insurance to cover unforeseen costs when travelling outside the province or Canada.
Purchase Alberta Blue Cross travel coverage for you and your family prior to leaving Alberta, even if you plan to be away for one (1) day. Our travel plans cover up to $5 million (CAD) for emergency medical expenses per covered person.
Do I need travel coverage if I travel in Canada?
Alberta Health limits some coverage outside the province. Albertans are strongly encouraged to purchase supplementary health insurance to cover unforeseen costs when travelling around Canada. Emergency medical travel plans cover some benefits such as return of vehicle, air ambulance, return of dependent children and medical evacuation repatriation. These are a few of the benefits your provincial health plan does not cover.
Do all companies in Alberta offer the same travel plans?
No. Travel plans differ on many levels:
- It’s important to understand if a claim will be paid as it relates to your pre-existing medical condition
- Does your pre-existing medical condition need to be stable for a specific period of time?
- Is there an overall travel plan maximum?
- Is there a deductible on the travel plan?
You want to ensure you buy a travel plan that meets your needs and will be there to protect you in an emergency.
