Commitment to accessibility and inclusion

At Alberta Blue Cross®, we believe that accessibility and inclusion are essential to stay true to our social purpose and deliver on our mission to enable and empower all Albertan's—regardless of ability—to take charge of their well-being and live their best lives.

Equal opportunity

Removing the barriers that prevent 13 per cent of Albertan's with varying degrees of permanent physical or mental disabilities from accessing essential information, products and services, we also meet the needs of the aging population and people with temporary or situational disabilities. Preserving the dignity and supporting independence of every Albertan.

Our standard

To make our websites welcoming and usable for every person regardless of age, stage or ability, we use standards set in place from the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA. Using these guidelines allows users who are equipped with assistive technologies, like screen reading software, screen enlargement software and alternative keyboard input devices, to have the same experience because we know that one size does not fit all.

Guiding principles

Additional information is included on all web pages—inclusive to a users' available senses. For example, video will have closed captions, transcripts and descriptive audio files for users with auditory challenges and images will have descriptive alternate text for users with screen readers.

All web pages are developed to support users with physical or motor disabilities to operate navigation with full keyboard functionality. This is reinforced by removing any automation, putting the interface control in the user’s hands and limiting any flashing or unexpected elements for users with cognitive impairments.

All content aims to support users at a grade three to grade six reading level and any industry jargon or legal terminology that cannot be avoided is supported with tool tips or on-screen descriptions. Likewise, any form fields requiring user input proactively prompts with examples or directions and errors are visually activated in a timely manner and in relative context.

Using responsive design and development, all web pages can be fully accessed, understood, utilized and actioned across any supported browser or device, enabling a wide range of technology from Chrome on a tablet, Safari on an iPhone to Jaws on a desktop.

While we make every effort to be accessible and inclusive, we cannot guarantee the accessibility of third-party websites linked from any Alberta Blue Cross® website, portal or application, nor compliance of any legacy Alberta Blue Cross® website, portal or application.
